The oldest district in beautiful Paris is the magnificent Marais. The Marais is an eclectic mix of restaurants old and new, art galleries, fashion ateliers, trendy new bars and the Jewish quartier.

The street entrance is a big battered green double door – once the entrance for the horse drawn carriages into this grand Hotel Particulier. Now a big protective door which hides the gem that lies inside. Leaving behind the buzz of the Marais streets you enter the grace and grandeur of 17 th Century Paris, stepping into a magnificent stone courtyard with buildings on 3 sides. To the right is the original Hotel Particulier in pristine condition and home to a world renowned architect and designer.

Opposite this building of 17 th Century strength and grandeur is the more youthful and stately 18 th century building of 6 floors an apartment on each floor. Through the unobtrusive pale blue door you will find a grand, sweeping staircase or alternatively and very practically the 20 th Century elevator that will comfortably carry you to the 6 th floor where a fashionable Parisian loft awaits.

The sixth floor puts you at the centre of light and the vista not of other apartments but the iconic rooftop skyline which can only be Paris . The lightness hits you as you enter the apartment – high windows either side of the large living space and sky lights fitted into the oak beamed ceiling. The sense of light is evident throughout the apartment in the two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The living area is one open space which has been designed to create two different “zones”. The first, as you enter the apartment, is an entertainment area of lounge and chairs surrounding a flat screen TV and CD player. The chaise lounge against the wall hints of a casual recline to observe the room, to listen to the music, or to sip champagne and read.

The second area comprises two lounges and a 21 st century version of a rocking chair, situated around the original stone fireplace. Here is a perfect environment for conversation, maybe after a dinner enjoyed at the dining table on the far wall.

The room oozes art and a spirit of colour and design. A large Australian native work hangs above the dining table. An Australian beach scape, and Australian contemporary piece, two French portraits and a contemporary geometric are just some of the art in this room. Two playful French works, one oil and the other pencil, hang either side of the antique gilt mirror above the fireplace.

The black chandeliers that hang in this room and the two tone parquetry of the floor add to the sense of energy and colour of this luxurious space. Shall we sit quietly, watch intently, listen happily, talk animatedly, eat, play? – all is possible.

At the far end of this room is the kitchen. A stone floor and stone bench tops, plentiful cupboard space, oven, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator, freezer, washing machine and dryer are all neatly contained. The kitchen has been set up to accommodate the keen chef, so pots, dishes and knives are all there to make for the perfect coq au vin. Windows in the kitchen look out into chimney pots and rooftops and off to the distance, Sacre Coeur.

The hallway which runs from the centre of the living room maintains lightness and brightness with a skylight set high into to the ceiling. A few parquetry steps down the hall and there is a guest bathroom.

This marble-lined room has shower and toilet, a full length mirror as well as a beautifully lit mirror over the vanity. The heated towel rail ensures that even during chilly mornings, comfort is always there.

A second door of this bathroom leads into the second bedroom thereby creating an ensuite for the guest bedroom. This room has built in robes and a double bed. The room is carpeted and suggests a little privacy that is warm and friendly. A small breakfast table and chairs offers the space for that first cup of coffee of the day, whilst still in the solitude of your room. Above the bed hangs a great Australian modern work, of two swimmers amidst the surf. This modern Australian feel is echoed in the equally great coastal painting of grazing cows.

Across the hall is the main bedroom and ensuite. Where colour and vibrancy are reflected in the guest room, the Master bedroom is more muted. A double bedroom, built in wardrobe, corner chest of draws and bedside tables provide every comfort.

The ensuite bathroom is marble lined with full size bath, shower, toilet and vanity basin. The heated towel rail features here as well to eradicate any cold chills. We hark back to old world with original wall lights in both bedroom and bathroom.

The Marche Rouge Enfant is a covered market an easy stroll from the Apartment on Rue Bretagne . Here you will find fruit, vegetables, cheese, seafood and fresh flowers – a gourmet's delight or a savvy shopper's paradise.

Rue Bretagne is where you will also find a choice of superb bakers, butchers and chocolatiers.
